A LANGE & SOHNE

« Back

In 1845, Ferdinand Adolph Lange established the Saxon precision watchmaking industry in Glashütte, near Dresden, Germany. In 1868 it was renamed “A. Lange & Söhne”, and in 1875, his sons (Richard and Emil) finally took over the business.
A memorable date for the prestigious brand is the year 1898 when a magnificent pocket watch was ordered by Kaiser William II as a gift to Sultan Abdul Hamid II. This watch is currently on display in a museum in Istanbul.
In 1900, at the World Exposition in Paris, Emil Lange presented his famous A. Lange & Söhne “Centennial Tourbillon”, a watch that ninety years later was acquired at auction for a price of  1.5 million dollars.
During the final days of WWII, the company’s main production workshops were bombed by a Russian airplane. The company was seized and expropriated by the communist regime and Walter Lange, following his forefathers’ destiny, was forced to flee his homeland. It was only in the 1990s, with the German reunification, that he returned to Glashütte, where he incorporated Lange Uhren GmbH, and registered the traditional trademark of  “A. Lange & Söhne”.

In 1994, the first Lange watches of the new era were presented in the Palace of Dresden. These were: A. Lange & Söhne Lange 1, A. Lange & Söhne Tourbillon “Pour le Morite”, A. Lange & Söhne Arkade and A. Lange & Söhne Saxonia.
In 1997, there was the launch of the Langematik, the Datograph in 1999, and in 2000, the Lange 1 Tourbillon.
With the new millennium, Lange joined the Richemont Group whilst continually  presenting new models such as the Langematik Perpetual (2001), the Lange 1 Moonphase (2002), and the Lange Double Split (2004).

The characteristic Saxon attitude for innovation, passion for manufacturing tradition and research have enriched the world of watchmaking with its innovations. A. Lange & Söhne company recognises that its success is also the merit of its employees. This is testified in the People and Their Craft section of the company’s official website. Here you can learn more through photos and interviews, about the prestigious brands engineers, watchmakers, engravers, inspectors and experts.
